"Your Huddled Masses" - Michael Matza
The Sunday Breakfast Club's enlightening tour of global issues, as seen through a Philadelphia prism, continues at the Feb. 7 meeting. The topic is immigration/refugee policy and the format will be distinctive and interactive. We'll start with a brief rundown on the state of play nationally and locally from Michael Matza, long-time immigration reporter for the Inquirer, now writing for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Recall that as we meet the March 5 deadline for doing something about DACA (i.e. the Dreamers act) will be less than a month away. Then we'll move to tabletop discussions with an array of guests who work every day on immigration or refugee issues. Each table will have a guest speaker, who will tell you briefly about his/her local work and take on the national scene, setting up an interactive discussion at each table. At the end, moderator Chris Satullo will harvest a few key insights and discoveries from the tabletop discussions. We've invited more than a dozen experts on the issue to join us. So far, we have acceptances from:
CATHRYN MILLER-WILSON, executive director, HIAS Pennsylvania,
MARGARET O’SULLIVAN, executive director, Nationalities Service Center,
SUNDROP CARTER, executive director, Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition (PICC),
JUDITH BERNSTEIN-BAKER, co-founder, Northwest Philadelphia Immigrant Action and Mobilization,
PETER GONZALES, executive director, Welcoming Center of Philadelphia
JAN TING, professor, Temple Law School and immigration blogger
ANDY TOY, development and communications director, SEAMAC
As always, the event will begin with cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be at the Union League.
Please reserve your spot ASAP for what we expect will be one of the more memorable sessions in recent years.
