ABOUT ABOUT

"The Shale Game - and More" - John Quigley

The hype has faded; the noisy controversies have died down.   But Pennsylvania remains home to much of the Marcellus Shale, one of the great energy finds of the last 100 years.   And the state's search to find the right balance between benefiting from this resource and protecting its environmental health trudges on.   For May's meeting of the Sunday Breakfast Club, continuing the theme of viewing national and global issues through a local prism, we turn to energy and the environment.  Our guest is John Quigley, a man who sat at the nexus of those two issues as he served in two major state Cabinet posts under two different governors.  Quigley was secretary of conservation and natural resources under Ed Rendell as the Marcellus Shale boom began; he had the job of negotiating the terms for drillers to work inside state forests.  Then, under Gov. Wolf, he served as secretary of environmental protection, as drillers sought looser monitoring and regulation.   Quigley, a former mayor of Hazleton, is now director of Center for Environment, Energy, and Economy at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, and an advisor to the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy at Penn.  Join us at the Union League at 5:30 p.m. for this timely program.  If you have any issues or questions you'd like our guest to address, please share them with program director Chris Satullo at [email protected]
