ABOUT ABOUT

"The Race to Save the News" - Molly De Aguiar, James Friedlich and Sara Lomax Reese

Suddenly we find ourselves in an age of "fake news" - as in bots ingeniously spreading misinformation and propaganda via social media - and "Fake News!" - as in a President of the United States waging an unprecedented campaign to undermine the credibility of the news media.  This comes on the heels of a technological paradigm shift (i.e. the Internet) which has proved as momentous as the Gutenberg Bible, exploding the business models which nurtured the "legacy media" as we used to know them.   Can the ideal of independent, credible journalism be rescued from this wreckage?  That's the national and global issue which we'll view through a Philadelphia prism at the March meeting of the Sunday Breakfast Club.  Our guests will be:  Molly De Aguiar, head of the News Integrity Initiative, a Facebook-funded effort to rebuild both trust in - and the trustworthiness of - the news media; James Friedlich, head of the Lenfest Institute, the innovative nonprofit set up as part of the donation of the Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com to the Philadelphia Foundation; and  Sara Lomax Reese, a Lenfest Institute board member who is the president and CEO of WURD radio.

Join us for this fascinating and timely exploration at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 6, at Drexel University.
